Paratroopers, soldiers trained to be launched into battle by parachute. Also known as parachute troops, they were originally used to attack targets that were inaccessible to aerial bombing. Their strategic importance ranges from raiding and diversion of opposing troops to providing an intervention force. Airborne troops have provided a surprise role in seizing vital targets such as airfields and oilfields, and in dropping behind enemy lines to disrupt the opposition's progress.
